Welcome to the future of travel: 48 hours in Fez is a city guide that you can read on paper in The Independent Traveller or check out online here - and watch on this screen as a 10-minute broadcast-quality film presented by Simon Calder. This vodcast is simply a short video that you can watch right now, or download and enjoy at your leisure. And the subject is the most magical city in Morocco.
Simon starts his trip on a hillside overlooking the amazing tangle of lanes and homes, industries and mosques that comprise the medieval Medina at the heart of Fez. He takes a hike in the company of a guide to get a close-up view of lifestyles unchanged for centuries, and enjoys lunch on the run at one of the hundreds of cheap and cheerful cafes. He then tries his hand at bargaining in the souk, enjoys a drink on the high-altitude terrace of a leading hotel and dines in style at a riad, or traditional mansion. Day Two begins in the Ville Nouvelle, created by the French during the colonial era and with its parks and gardens - feeling a lot like Paris. He goes out for brunch to a stylish café, before returning to the Medina for an afternoon of culture at the citys most beautiful Medersa, or Koranic college. Simon ends his two high-intensity days by relaxing at one of the many hammams traditional baths that take all the stresses out of travel.
